In Other Lands is a delightful read.
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan is a heartfelt spin on the Harry Potter trope and had me laughing out loud in the airport shuttle while on a trip to visit my parents. What if kids at magic camp actually behaved like real adolescents? What if Harry had sexual feelings about his classmates?
Elliot is unapologetically obnoxious as navigates the disappointments of visiting a magical world. As we get to know him, it is impossible to not feel sympathetic with his desire to tell the Truth as he sees it. Mermaids, Dwarves, Harpies and hot Elves… yeah, sure… that’s all great. But there is far too much poking-people-with-swords in the Borderlands! But Elliot has plans to stop all that unnecessary dismemberment and death.
Truly loved this book. I’ve revisited it as the years have gone by, and every read holds up nearly as fresh as the first time.
