The Last Man of Thebes

The film 300 brought attention to the famed warrior-lovers who died in a last stand to protect the city of Thebes. This book’s premise is that one soldier survived… or was rather sent back by the gods. The story gets pretty gritty at times. Life in ancient Greece was not an easy one and sometimes characters that we like do really awful things. The story is epic in scope. The world is rich with detail. The author clearly did a lot of research and it shows. The moral complexity of the times was occasionally challenging to me as a modern reader, but ultimately The Last Man of Thebes has been a memorable read.

The story follows the last surviving member of the Sacred Band of Thebes, a group of warriors known for their bravery and loyalty. After the Battle of Chaeronia, he leads a resistance against the Macedonian forces occupying his city. Along the way, he falls in love with a Macedonian hostage.
The story is told through the perspectives of four characters: the last survivor of the Sacred Band, a Macedonian soldier, Alexander the Great, and his lover, Hephaestion.

The Purple Fantastic Steam Rating gives this a 4 out of 5. There is sexual activity, but it is so rooted in the story I didn’t find it excessive. You can read more about the Steam Ratings on the About Page.
