Toolie Bird Landscape progress

Applying paper clay now on top of the lumpy Activa Celluclay. I used that to bulk up areas that were too flat from the cardboard understructure. The goal is to confuse the lines a bit towards something more natural. But the Celluclay is not great for any detail work. The texture is far too coarse.

I’ve never used this premixed Creative Paperclay before and it works great, but dries fast. So I do a little bit at a time and then have to let it dry. Then I move elsewhere, so I don’t bump it and mess it up.  I learned the hard way that you need to apply white glue (Tacky Glue in my case) to the surface before the Paperclay, or it won’t stick. I’m using small clay sculpting tools to carve in the details. There are a number of landscape bits that will be created in Blender and printed in resin.

There is a lot of discovery in this process. The entirety is going to be a lot deeper than I originally planned. Eight inches instead of four inches. Originally I was thinking bas-relief for much of it. But to stop-motion the little rap-scallion on the scooter along the road in, across the bridge, and out, just wasn’t working on the more stylized approach. And I need at least an inch between the final landscape and the back wall for lighting. There will also be some thinner pipe trees back there as well. I typically listen to audio books while working. At the moment, I’m listening to What if it’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera.

Bit by bit…
