I paint a Dice Tower
Painting the chess sets off Etsy was the start of painting miniatures for me. It was something relaxing to do in the evenings after work as an alternative to watching TV. It was nice to have something to show for the time. Everdell was a bit more a challenge than the chess sets due to their much smaller size (about an inch tall), and then I ended up doing a lot of small random D&D minis just because I admired the sculpting… but often they were VERY small. I’ll post them at some point. I painted about 50 of them. And then I painted the Mansions of Madness figures from the game I had, and the Last Night on Earth figures…
When I saw this Dice Tower on Etsy, it was a fun opportunity to paint something larger. I used copper on the roof architecture… doesn’t read real well in the photo, but I have come to appreciate a judicious use of metallic paint on miniatures (and that which is not so miniature). I decided to go with a brick tone on the bricks instead of a more classic stone, mostly to give more opportunity for color contrast with the green wash I used to age the brick, the brown roofs, and the stone of the cliff. I considered going with ambers and more of a warm golden tone with the castle walls… that could have worked nicely as well.
I’m presently painting the 74(?) battle worms from the Worms board game I invested in through Kickstarter. Nearly done… THAT has been a project… considering I only work on them evenings and spare moments on weekends.
I’m looking forward to painting things that I create in Blender and print as 3D objects. My first project with that is to create a forest for the Toolie Birds. They are a breakfast cereal toy premium from the 1970s. They are part of my vintage cereal toy project. I’ve about 8 collections of vintage cereal toys with which I’m creating framed dioramas for and will be recreating the original boxes that they were found in. Sort of a fun side project.
I’m still reading of course. Though at the moment I’m reading Terry Pratchett’s Unseen Academicals which unfortunately doesn’t fall under the purview of this site, though I was amused that in this book there is casual speculation as to Ventinari’s (the benevolent tyrant of Ankh-Morpork) sexuality. Pratchett is a delightfully smart writer. But I’ll have more entries for The Purple Fantastic soon. I did very much enjoy Voyage of the Damned by Frances White. It was a murder mystery that kept me guessing.
