This Fatal Kiss

I enjoyed this dive into folklore with water, forest, and sky spirits (among others). The world of This Fatal Kiss seems generally open minded about diverse sexuality. There are some uptight judgmental characters in the background, but they don’t factor into the story very much. I love that it addresses pansexuality and bisexuality. Topics that are often ignored in LGBTQ literature, and in this case the wild card made it difficult to see how the plot would play out. My only complaint is that the ending leaves some major plot threads up in the air and waiting for a sequel. This story is set in another time and place… a little like today, but also in a world of magic and charming villages. Most of the characters seem to fall into the LGBTQ spectrum.

There is a sapphic novel set in the same world, , (but apparently is a different series) that’s out. The sequel to this book is in the works… looks like we have at least another year to wait till it is completed.

But again, I did enjoy this book’s imagination and its twisting plot. It is worth checking out.

Spirit away with a whimsical fantasy filled with dark magic and flirty, polyamorous romance.

Cursed to haunt the river running through the magical spa town where she drowned, Gisela is a water nymph who dreams of returning to the living world and the family she left behind. All it takes to regain her humanity is a kiss from a mortal…but everyone sees her as a monster.

And then there’s Kazik, the brooding, interfering, spirit-hunting grandson of a local witch. He’s determined to rid the world of unholy creatures like Gisela. After Kazik botches Gisela’s exorcism, she strikes up a deal. She won’t tell the other spirits that he’s losing his magic, if he agrees to play matchmaker and helps her get a kiss. But Gisela’s plan goes awry when Kazik also falls for the devilishly handsome young man that she sets her heart on—someone who could be linked to Gisela’s troubled past.

This delectable quest through the spirit world is cozily crafted with a hauntingly opulent atmosphere and a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers story told in multiple perspectives. Young adult readers are sure to kick their feet and squeal with glee at hilarious banter, scrumptious culinary delights, and endearing sisterhood and found family. An enchanting read for fairy tale enthusiasts and fans of queer romance!

The Purple Fantastic Steam Meter gives this a 2. The story explores bisexuality and polyamory, and at times makes mild references to anatomy, but there is no sexual behavior described on the page beyond a few kisses. You can read more about the Steam Ratings on the About Page.
