The City Beautiful

This is a great read. Unexpected. I appreciated the obvious amount of historical research into the time and place, and the challenges that Jewish immigrants faced before and after they immigrated. This was a difficult plot to predict… it didn’t fall prey to formula. The mixture of supernatural with solving the mystery of who is killing these young Jewish men who are disappearing, never slipped away from its roots in reality. There were a few moments I had to step away from the story simply because the tension was too intense. The hero was at times a little too stupid to believe… as were some of the actions of the antagonist/s, but arguably I also might not have the clearest of heads if a vengeful spirit resided within me. So I gave the hero a bit of leeway there. But all in all it is a thoroughly engaging mystery.

The reader for the audio book did a great job as well.

The author is interviewed at this link:

“It was definitely a challenge writing a gay Jewish protagonist set during that time period, because I had to filter all his perceptions through both his upbringing and religion, as well as the Victorian era’s views on same-sex attraction. Back then, he wouldn’t have shared our contemporary definition of homosexuality. This affected how I had Alter view his own sexuality, and the way he describes it.

I hope that it will shed some light on Jewish history. Many readers may not be aware that antisemitism did not begin with the Holocaust, and I am hoping that with this novel’s description of antisemitism in Imperial Russia, it might lead to readers researching the history further. For Jewish readers in particular, I am hoping that this book will allow them to read about a protagonist who is not simply a passive victim, as seems to be the case in the Holocaust novels I grew up reading — which were essentially my only exposure to novels with Jewish main characters.”

“An achingly rendered exploration of queer desire, grief, and the inexorable scars of the past.” —Katy Rose Pool, author of There Will Come A Darkness

Death lurks around every corner in this unforgettable Jewish historical fantasy about a city, a boy, and the shadows of the past that bind them both together.

Chicago, 1893. For Alter Rosen, this is the land of opportunity, and he dreams of the day he’ll have enough money to bring his mother and sisters to America, freeing them from the oppression they face in his native Romania.

But when Alter’s best friend, Yakov, becomes the latest victim in a long line of murdered Jewish boys, his dream begins to slip away. While the rest of the city is busy celebrating the World’s Fair, Alter is now living a nightmare: possessed by Yakov’s dybbuk, he is plunged into a world of corruption and deceit, and thrown back into the arms of a dangerous boy from his past. A boy who means more to Alter than anyone knows.

Now, with only days to spare until the dybbuk takes over Alter’s body completely, the two boys must race to track down the killer—before the killer claims them next.

“Chillingly sinister, warmly familiar, and breathtakingly transportive, The City Beautiful is the haunting, queer Jewish historical thriller of my darkest dreams.”Dahlia Adler, creator of LGBTQreads and editor of That Way Madness Lies

The Purple Fantastic Steam Rating gives this a 2 out of 5, though not due to steamy scenes in this case. Those are left extremely vague and off the page. But there is reference to sexual assault of children, murder, violence, and yet it handles those subjects pretty carefully and always in context of the larger social issues of the time. It is mature reading, but not too mature for a sensible and mature young reader. You can read more about the Steam Ratings on the About Page.
