Nicked

The title of the book made me smile as I realized that this book was about stealing the bones of St. Nick. Though the “uproarious” humor touted in the reviews seems a bit overstated (if one is familiar with some of the absurd beliefs of the Middle Ages), there is much to like in this tale of adventure from the past. You can read the history that it is based on here:

The storytelling reminds me of The Canterbury Tales or The Droll Stories of Balzac. Within the larger narrative there are many smaller stories that cumulatively fill out the world. In some ways it hurts the momentum of the larger narrative, but then again those stories make that world more colorful. There is something about Nicked that is larger than a simple swashbuckling narrative. It wasn’t gripping, but it was fascinating in its way and is a unique bit of history, told here through the lens of a young monk who is very aware of the charismatic thief of relics. So far this tale is more adventure than romance. There are deadpan observations of religious silliness and cruelty, as well as a window into the complicated politics of early Europe. The research that went into writing this book was thorough. The descriptions of life at the time, and the interplay of cultures and religions is nuanced. Well done.

I did laugh out loud more than once. I found the humor cumulated as I got deeper into the story. The absurdities piled up and it became rather delightful at some points. I’m glad that I didn’t live in that era. It was not an easy time for most folks. It was a very satisfying read.

AN NPR NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the award-winning and bestselling author of Feed comes a raucous, slyly funny, and delightfully queer work of historical fantasy, based on a bizarre but true quest to steal the mystical corpse of a long-dead saint

“[An] uproarious saga . . . drawing on contemporary accounts, fantastical folk tales, and [Anderson’s] own knack for high jinks.”—New York Times Book Review

“[A] rollicking comic novel.”—NPR

The year is 1087, and a pox is sweeping through the Italian city of Bari. When a lowly monk is visited by Saint Nicholas in his dreams, he interprets the vision as a call to serve the sick. But his superiors, and the power brokers they serve, have different plans for the tender-hearted Brother Nicephorus.

Enter Tyun, a charismatic treasure hunter renowned for “liberating” holy relics from their tombs. The seven-hundred-year-old bones of Saint Nicholas are rumored to weep a mysterious liquid that can heal the sick, Tyun says. For the humble price of a small fortune, he will steal the bones and deliver them to Bari, curing the plague and restoring glory to the fallen city. And Nicephorus, the “dreamer,” will be his guide.

What follows is a heist for the ages, as Nicephorus is swept away on strange tides, and alongside even stranger bedfellows, to commit sacrilegious theft. Based on real historical accounts, Nicked is a swashbuckling saga, a medieval novel noir, a meditation on the miraculous, and a monastic meet-cute, filled with wide-eyed wonder at the world that awaits beyond our own borders.

The Purple Fantastic Steam Rating gives this a 2 out of 5. This book is not that steamy (it actually could do with a bit more INHO) but it is frank about sexual matters. You can read more about the Steam Ratings on the About Page.
